Sustainable Girdwood
Recycling, Reduction & Reuse
This page is under construction, come back soon
The previous recycling program that existed in Girdwood was unable to continue because it was dependent on trucks moving the stock all the way to Anchorage. So the cost of the transportation outweighed the materials value. Public funds and grants were the only means of funding the operation.
There are other possibilities for a smarter infrastructure.
-Immediate local use of the material via alternative building materials.
-Placing focus on high value metals such as aluminum.
-Manufacturing from immediate stock could provide new, innovative jobs in the community.
-Creating a municipal mandate that would require trash haulers to include transport of recycling in order to move standard trash from the Girdwood area for profit.
